Corfu International Airport or Ioannis Kapodistrias airport, named after Ioannis Kapodistrias, distinguished Corfiot European diplomat and first Governor of Greece, is located around 3 kilometers south of Corfu Town and half a kilometer north of Pontikonisi. It is an airport on the Greek island of Corfu at Kerkyra, serving both scheduled and charter flights from European cities. Air traffic peaks during the summer season, between April and October. The airport entered operation in 1962 and become international, the new passenger station finished in 1972. This is a basic small airport with limited services, still it offers domestic flights with Olympic Airlines and Aegean Airlines, but the vast majority of traffic in the summer season is charter flights for holidaymakers. The city of Corfu is just few minutes drive. The majority of the charter traffic arrives on Mondays and Fridays, for the sake of tranquility during the rest of the week, since the airport is on the outskirts of Corfu Town itself, and to coincide with the change-over days for holiday apartment rentals. Many flights to and from Athens are effectuated every day and flights from Thessaloniki are available three times a week. One can reach or leave the airport by local bus or by one of the many taxis that are waiting outside. A lot of hotels propose their own mini bus to effectuate the transfer from and to the airport. Tourists can also rent a car at Car Rental Company, which can be found at the Corfu airport. Mondays and Fridays tend to be the most crowded days to fly through Kerkyra airport, and long lines are common in high season. If you’re traveling on your own, rather than part of a group, try to avoid those days for the smoothest experience. Corfu is especially popular with British visitors, and many Britain-based airlines offer regular service to Corfu via Corfu Airport.
